Choosing Peace

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” ~ Romans 12:21

The envelope sat on the kitchen counter for several hours before Tegan opened it. The handwriting carried the past in scribbled lines—years of being dismissed, diminished, and broken— haunting the paper with memories she’d long tried to outrun.

For a long time, she’d imagined revenge. Clever words spoken with perfect timing. Cold silences that would leave questions hanging. A life so visibly restored it would sting to witness. Tegan had practiced those scenes the way actors rehearse stage performances, hoping they might finally bring relief and balance the scales.

But time and God’s quiet work had done something deeper. It wasn't a lightning strike, but a slow, gentle unclenching.

It happened in the early mornings when her panic attacks receded, replaced by the steady rhythm of her own breathing. It happened on the days she stood on a hiking trail, watching the morning light hit the sugar maples, fully present in their beauty. It happened on the afternoon she knelt in the grass to pet an excitable puppy, laughing freely as it licked her face.

Slowly, in the background of ordinary life, God had replaced her need for retribution with quiet resilience.

The ache remained, but it no longer kept her prisoner.

When Tegan finally opened the letter, it was brief. She read the sentence she'd dreamed of a thousand times. “I was wrong.” She stared at the words a little longer than she expected. Once, she believed those three words would give her back everything she'd lost. They didn't. They simply reminded her that God already had.

Then the moment passed.

Tegan laid the letter on the counter and looked out the window. She watched a pair of sparrows splash in the birdbath and smiled.

She traced the uneven handwriting once more. For years, it had held power. Now it was simply ink on paper. Taking one slow, deliberate breath, Tegan slipped the letter back into its envelope. No response was needed.

Every step faithful step she took led her deeper into His peace—a reminder that His love never abandons, and His goodness always follows. Gazing up at blue sky brushed with the whitest clouds, she offered a silent, steady breath:

Lord, help me release what no longer serves my healing. Guard my heart from bitterness and fill it instead with Your grace. Teach me to move forward in Your peace, trusting that You see all things, restore what is broken, and transform my pain into Your glory. Amen
