“There is a season and a time for every matter under heaven. ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1
Every year, a quiet migration unfolds. Instinct drives snowbirds
thousands of miles southward, from the frosty north to sun-drenched
sanctuaries. Some people mimic their flight, chasing the promise of eternal
warmth and easier living.
But I’ve always been a four-season guy. I love the variety. Because I have no say in when the sun blazes, the rain falls, or the snow flies, the seasons teach me patience—forcing me to slow down and appreciate God’s hand at work.
Winter will soon arrive, ushering in longer
nights, cozy sweaters, and hot cocoa. It also brings biting winds, treacherous
ice, and long stretches of isolation. Yet within its starkness, the world
settles into a deep, meditative quiet.
Winter schools us in the elegance of
simplicity, the power of resilience, and the necessity of rest. Bare trees and
falling snow seem to call us to release the habits, heavy relationships, and
emotional baggage we no longer need to carry.
Then, bursting
from winter’s dormant womb, spring arrives with a rebirth of blooming flowers,
budding branches, and lengthening days. The sight of verdant landscapes and the
song of returning birds capture the very essence of vitality.
I welcome spring
because it transfuses hope. Without fail, nature begins anew—and so can we, as
often as necessary. It invites us to set new goals, begin new projects, and
discover fresh ways to flourish.
Summer takes the stage like a celebratory
parade. Nature slowly but steadily cranks up the intensity, flooding the world
with life and color. Lush
green landscapes stretch across the horizon, and lingering twilights allow us to bask in
the sun’s glory a little longer.
In summer’s
warmth, all living things thrive. The sun seems to melt tension from our minds
and bodies, spilling over into how we treat others. Amid July’s golden clarity,
gentle breezes whisper a reminder of how good it feels to simply be.
Eventually, the
earth tilts away from the sun, and autumn arrives like a chariot of fire.
Forests blaze with vibrant hues, painting a masterpiece of fleeting beauty. A
rustic carpet of fallen leaves reminds us that change is not a tragedy, but a
necessary part of life.
Just as the
seasons move in a continual cycle, our lives follow a rhythmic tide. Each
chapter has its purpose, preparing us for the next.
I’d miss having
all four. In winter, we turn inward to reflect; in spring, we blossom; in
summer, we reach outward; and in autumn, we gracefully let go. Perhaps that’s
the beauty of the seasons: they remind us that change isn’t something to fear,
but part of the tapestry God is continually weaving.
Lord of all seasons, You are the Craftsman
weaving the beautiful tapestry of our lives, and no season is accidental. As I
prepare for what comes next, clear the path before me and show me the steps to
take. Amen
